Are you a 'math person' or not?
It's now Tuesday... so apparently I wasn't in the mindset for Monday yesterday! Anywho... I shall continue on the path to Mindset Monday because it's great information for any day of the week.
Have you ever heard, been told, or even said to yourself, "It's okay, you're just not a math person." or "It's okay, I wasn't good at math either."? You hear this far more in the field of mathematics, than any other. #weird
According to Jo Boaler in her latest book Mathematical Mindsets, "Mathematics, more than any other subject, has the power to crush students' spirits, and many adults do not move on from mathematics experiences in school if they are negative." True you say? So what you say? Well....
As an individual, teacher, parent, and society, we need to stop sending the detrimental, traumatic, and anxiety-ridden message that some people have a "math brain" and others do not. Brain research tells us that with small changes in teaching, and learning about growth mindset, that our brain, and our math skills can grow. It is not determined from birth how "mathematical" we are, or are not. The video below is great for ALL, even students. Spread the word.
You CAN do math, maybe just not yet. You can get there! You can grow!
