Surviving the Week(s) Before Break
As we approach winter break, a wide array of feelings, concerns, and emotions are up in the air, or buried way down deep inside. One way or another, the feeling of anticipation is on most teachers', students', and family members' minds. For some this is an excited, happy feeling (Buzz Lightyear), for others it may be one of dread (Woody). So take a moment to consider these tips for survival for your sake, and the sake of your students:
- Teachers (and students)... keep going to school! Your students need you and the consistency you offer. I'm all about mental health and taking care of you, but take just these last days before winter break to be the most selfless you can be.
- Keep teaching! (Keep Learning!) It's easy to lower expectations as both teachers and students get tired and see the end in near, but you'd be surprised how dedicated students can still be when you teach until the end. If you are doing a holiday or seasonal activity, or craft with your students, please remember that sometimes this brings up bad memories, or sad feelings for some students.
- Incorporate some more brain breaks for students (and yourself)! Sometimes it is hard for students to get their minds off thinking about break, whether that be because they are excited, or scared. Use a brain break to get them re-focused.
- Be patient! This is hard to say, and as an impatient person, I understand that this is extra challenging to DO. If a student is acting out beyond what they ever have before, consider finding some time to talk to them privately. Assume positive intentions, and that they are acting out in an attempt to take care of themselves, whether that be to protect themselves from some thing, some one, or some feeling they are having.
