What is Culturally Relevant Pedagogy?
Why is Culturally Relevant and Responsive Teaching Important?
According to Gloria, culturally responsive teachers focus on three things:
- Student learning and academic achievement,
- Cultural competence, and
- Critical consciousness.
There is plenty of data and statistics out there that demonstrate the well-documented achievement gap. With the use of CRT, this gap can be closed. As administrators and teachers learn more about culturally relevant teaching practices, and embody what it means to be culturally responsive, students will experience education in a different way. Instead of a sit and get, CRT will empower students academically, socially, and emotionally and pull on these strengths to grow them. Our students need us to know ourselves, know them, know their families, their communities, and not only believe in their future, but help them get there!
